Dustin was in a car accident August 2010 and sustained major spinal cord damage, a broken upper arm, collapsed lung, broken ribs, cracked sternum & a mild brain injury. Dustin has a T-5 complete spinal cord injury (SCI) which means he has no feeling below his mid-chest. He was told he would never move below his waist again, but after being part of an SCI research project at the University of Kentucky in Louisville he is able to move his legs and stand.
Through his adversity, he was able to find a silver lining, in which he is striving to help not only bring awareness to spinal cord injuries, but to motivate the lives of everyone who has a struggle. Dustin embodies the true nature of always loving oneself, but to consistently work for improvement
Dustin says “I was paralyzed August 26th 2010 in a car accident. Before that day I loved spending my time out at the lake on my boat and in the winter time you’d find me in the mountains. Snowmobiling was a huge passion of mine and every chance I could get I was on one.
I’ve had the opportunity to work for the Christopher Reeve Foundation and that experience inspired me to start my own. I’m involved with cutting edge research for spinal cord injuries and helping to improve the lives of people in wheelchairs.
I’ve been paralyzed almost 11 years and it’s been a crazy ride but I wouldn’t change it for anything. I now have a beautiful wife and two amazing children! Having a family has made my life super fun and busy. Currently I’m thinking of what I’m going to do for the next chapter of my life. While I’ll continue to build my foundation I’m on the hunt for something more.”

Through his education and experience working for a think-tank that studied the costs and benefits of the death penalty Nick’s perspective changed.
In this conversation we discuss how a long-held belief, whether it be political, financial, spiritual, etc can change with time, education and perspective.

EVOLVE SHORT: Evolving Your Personal Political Conversations
Thursday Jul 01, 2021
Thursday Jul 01, 2021
Let’s face it. We live in an highly politically divisive time in America. Nothing significant will be changed by creating stronger camps on the left and the right. Learning to have intelligent and open conversations with those who see the world different from you is the first step.
Start with an open mind. Chose someone to talk to who has a different perspective than you. Close your mouth and open your ears. Listen. Hear. Empathize. THEN share your thoughts. Coming together on social, economic and political issues requires an open and curious mind. Seeking solutions together rather than staking claims on “who’s right” is key.
Be bold by being open and practicing a growth mindset. Try it and get a conversation buddy that will help expand your perspective.
