EVOLVE 35 - Watercolor Master Al Rounds
Sunday Sep 26, 2021
Sunday Sep 26, 2021
Al Rounds’ transparent watercolors register a beautiful familiarity with the world we all love. They carry us over a distance of miles and years, which speak of history revisited and of lives well-lived. Scouring back roads and country lanes, searching for the past, Al Rounds continues to capture a particular reverence for the pride of a place. Travel provides an ongoing source of inspiration for Al. Some of his favorite findings are in upstate New York, with its rural integrity and four-season beauty; in England, with its meandering, damp cobblestone streets; and in his native Utah, where pioneer history still crowds the fence lines and farmsteads of every town.
The size, historical significance, and accuracy of the architectural landscapes he creates are hallmarks of his work. Al can’t think of a time when he didn’t want to be an artist. While his classmates were working on the serious business of school, Al would be gazing out the window, daydreaming about drawing. It is apparent that he has always been drawn to architectural landscape. His first grade teacher sent a note home to his mother asking if Al knew how to draw anything other than his house.
In 1977, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah. His painting technique was influenced there by the English portrait master, Alvin Gittins, and newspaper art critic and watercolorist, George Dibble.
Utah-born, Al Rounds was brought up in the small-town community of Walnut Creek, California. This internationally acclaimed artist now finds retreat in his home nestled in the Rocky Mountains of Utah.

Dr. Martin Crous has an MBA from the University of West London and received his doctorate in Business Administration & Corporate Strategy from Washington International University
“When I was about 10 years old, due to a disease to my right hip, I was told that I would not be able to do any sport especially a contact sport or one where I would put pressure on my hips.”
Martin grew up in South Africa. At 8 years old he was diagnosed with Perthes disease, which is a condition in children characterized by a temporary loss of blood supply to the hip. Without an adequate blood supply, the rounded head of the femur the "ball" of the hip joint dies.
Martin continues “I was the first patient to have surgery in our city for Perthes. The surgery was to my right hip where two stainless steel pins were placed. I remained in the hospital for about 6 months with weights on my right leg to pull my leg and keep it extended and straight. For two years after that I had irons (similar to those of Forest Gump) on my right leg and had to wear built-up shoes.”
Afterward Martin was bed ridden for another 6 months with a plaster of paris cast from his torso all the way down to his toes on his right leg. The doctors told me that I would never be able to do any sports, that I would need to wear a buildup shoe on my right leg for the rest of my life, and that I would need a hip transplant when I reach the age of 40.
Martin says “I can still remember the days when I would crawl to our front gate, waiting for my brother to come home from school. He would pick me up and help me as I was limping towards our front door of our home. I cannot remember how long it took me before I could walk unaided again but I can remember that I was very determined to not only start walking again, but to prove to everyone and myself, that I will be able to run!
These challenges and experiences has only made me stronger and made me realize that nothing in life is impossible as long as you believe in yourself and your goals.
I live by this quote by Paul J. Meyer: “Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe and enthusiastically act upon, must inevitably come to pass”.”
As of today, Martin has run more than 70 Marathons and is also a Private International Certified NAASFP (North American Academy of Sports Fitness Professionals) as well as a Certified RRCA (Road Runners Club of America) Marathon Running Coach.
Martin also an international certified life/business and executive coach and currently is working as the Vice President of Business Development for a medical device manufacturer.
Martin’s travels have taken me all over the world for both personal and business development in both hemispheres. Martin has coached, consulted and trained with everything from new start-ups to multi-million-dollar companies, showing them how to massively grow their business and increase their profits.
Martin is also a published author of Mission Possible - "Strategies and competencies of Successful Corporate Turnaround Executives."

EVOLVE YOUR MIND W/Fine Artist Hillary Scott
Wednesday Sep 15, 2021
Wednesday Sep 15, 2021
What does it truly take to evolve your mind to see the world for what it is rather than what you think it is? In this episode fine artist Hillary Scott discusses some techniques for artists to see rather than just work from bias.
Hillary Scott is an academically trained landscape painter from northeast Massachusetts. She earned her BFA from UMass Low- ell (2002) in children's book illustration. She illustrated books for many years before making the transition to landscape painting in 2014. Hillary has an affinity for marshes, seas, and skies and finds endless inspiration in the beautiful New England landscape. She has studied with contemporary artists including Karen Black- wood and Sean Beavers in addition to workshops with other local artists. Since she began exhibiting her oil paintings a few years ago she has been accepted into numerous juried shows and won several awards. Her landscape paintings are in private collections worldwide. Hillary is a member of the Oil Painters of America and a master artist member of Newburyport Art Association
Hillary says that “as a former illustrator, my technique and goals have evolved. I've long admired painters like Maxfield Parrish, who successfully cre- ated a perfect balance between realism and fantasy. Thus, the purely magical scenes I once painted have been incorporated into realist images sourced from plein air studies, photos, visits, memory and imagination. In my latest series of paintings, I strive to capture the fleeting moments of morning and evening light. I'm fascinated by the effect of light on landscapes and attempt to convey a sense of space, season, serenity, and nostalgia.
My compositions are designed to evoke an emotional reaction from the viewer; I consider a visceral response from my audience an important measure of success for a painting. Though I consider myself a realist, the minute details of a place are secondary to the mood and lighting they capture.”
